Experimental Evaluation of Dynamic LSA Operation in Live 3GPP LTE System

Experimental evaluation of dynamic LSA-compatible spectrum management framework in live 3GPP LTE system (700 MHz band). The main goal was to demonstrate how the principles of dynamic LSA could be implemented in a real-world commercial deployment.

Today, the research community together with the Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) have already recognized the very promising potential of the LSA framework. Indeed, LSA comes particularly helpful to promptly improve the capacity and coverage of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) as well as to support novel spectrum-hungry applications and services based on e.g., high-definition holography or virtual/augmented reality. In light of this, the Conference Europeenne des Postes et des Telecommunications (CEPT) had established two project teams (PT52 and PT53) to ensure that there are no barriers to the LSA adoption in 2.3–2.4 GHz bands from a regulatory perspective, while European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has already outlined the LSA system architecture and released the respective technical specifications. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has introduced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) along the lines of shared access in 3.5 GHz band that is similar in the spirit to the LSA concept.

However, the achievable QoS levels and the corresponding service reliability within the LSA framework are not nearly well-understood and more knowledge on these should become essential for any further development of the LSA-related specifications. To bridge this glaring gap, our team, composed of researchers and engineers from Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic), Tampere University of Technology (Finland), RUDN University (Russia) and YL-Verkot (Finland), has committed to comprehensively understand the limits of dynamic LSA operation by implementing a practical trial in a live cellular system. To this end, we have completed a systematic evaluation of the LSA-compliant spectrum sharing technology in our own 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) testbed.

The main goal behind our trial is to demonstrate how the principles of dynamic LSA-compatible spectrum sharing could be implemented in a real-world, commercial-grade 3GPP LTE network.
